My Thoughts on AI Coding Agents and Software Engineers

1. AI coding agents can handle the coding, so we no longer need engineers who are only good at basic coding.

2. But we do need engineers who understand software development and can orchestrate and review the AI’s output and you can only do that well if you have real coding experience behind you.

3. Many new engineers may not be motivated to learn core programming when AI can do it for them. That makes them weak reviewers of the AI’s work, because you can’t review what you don’t understand.

4. New engineers should aim to be strong at both. Learn to code deeply and learn to work with AI, because that combination is exactly what companies need right now.

5. For experienced engineers, orchestrating and reviewing the AI’s work will keep you valuable in your current role. But to move up, you need a product mindset—because once everyone has AI, coding skill alone stops being scarce, and scarce skills are what create competitive advantage.

6. So if you’re a smart engineer with a product mindset, the future is yours.
